Treasure Hunt Saves City Money

It has often been said “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”. Now that spring has arrived, the presence of yard and garage sales abound. Every day, faithful shoppers and bargain hunters scour the highways and byways searching for “deals”.

During the past ten months, the Campbellsville Police have engaged in their own bargain hunting. The Campbellsville Police Department is a member of the Department of Defense (DOD) Reutilization Program administered through the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO). This service was established in 1990 as part of the Federal Executive Branch strategy to “re-size” the military, which resulted in a series of military installations being closed and much of their excess property declared as “surplus”. In their efforts to make these items still useful, the Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO) was established to funnel equipment to federal, state and local law enforcement departments. This mechanism allowed state and local police agencies to enroll in this loan and acquisition program at no cost to their respective state or local government. The result is a treasure trove of items ranging from small hardware pieces to large trucks to certain types of weapons.

Moreover, each state has a coordinating agency which serves as a resource to guide and support subscribing agencies. In Kentucky, the Kentucky State Police is the designated coordinating agency. Subsequently, the Campbellsville Police Department enrolled in the program some years ago.

However, during this past year, the department has increased its use of this service as a means to acquire and provide the resources needed by its personnel to perform its everyday tasks. Not only were (are) these items needed, everything obtained through this program saves money for the city. As local government budgets have become more austere during the recent economic down-turn, Items obtained through this program prevent them from being purchased from the city budget, therefore a savings and enhanced stewardship of tax dollars.

As of this writing, the Campbellsville Police Department has received vehicles, boots, cold weather clothing, evidence storage equipment, office supplies, computers, radios, physical fitness equipment and maintenance equipment. All total, the police department has received items valued at $480,000.00 (based on the Department of Defense’s original purchase price). The only expense incurred has been shipping for some articles, which has totaled about $3,000.00. This is further evidence that our police department and this administration is committed to excellence and service to our community.

Now that’s a bargain!
